The miniature railway in Crowborough is maintained and operated by the Crowborough Locomotive Society, a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers.
The Society is always looking for new members to help improve, maintain, and operate the miniature railway. You do not need to have a special talent or offer great engineering skills (or any particular skills at all), but just a general interest in what we do, and feel you would like to be a part of a sociable club, offering a very unique, fun and educational facility to the community in and around Crowborough.
In addition to this, there is no requirement to own a locomotive to run. Members who show a general interest may well get the opportunity to learn how to drive an engine, and eventually take the public for train rides.
There is no end to the number of jobs that need doing. Whether painting, doing track maintenance, signalman, ticket inspector, or booking clerk, a varied and enjoyable choice is offered. No matter what the job, training will be given!
Fully paid up members will receive newsletters throughout the year, information on outings and visits to other clubs, inclusion on the Society’s public liability insurance, and a chance to give input on many topics and tasks – it doesn’t take long for people to be lumbered with assigned a job, even if it’s just making the tea!
Working parties take place during the week (normally Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays) and on Saturdays out of season (yellow days on the timetable). These are, of course, in addition to our normal operating Saturdays and Special Events when we play trains!
Members need to be at least 16 years of age, and the membership year starts in the spring, when we hold our AGM. Under 16s are welcome to visit with a parent/guardian (who will need to be a fully paid member of the Society) and be supervised at all times. For legal reasons, under 16s (junior members) cannot be included on the Society’s public liability insurance for driving trains.
For information on becoming a member, please contact our Membership Secretary, Chris Turley on 01435 864153, or feel free to visit in person on any working party, or running day and we would love to meet you!
